Compromised Versus Purist Recordings

If It's About the Music,
the Choice Is Clear

  (Item #: doobicapta_vs_dd)

A while back one of our good customers wrote to tell us how much he liked his Century Direct to Disc recording of the Glenn Miller big band, one of the few really amazing sounding direct to recordings that has music actually worth listening to. Which brought me to the subject of Hot Stampers.

Hot Stamper pressings are almost always going to be studio multi-track recordings, not live Direct to Discs. They will invariably suffer many compromises compared to the purist approach of an audiophile label trying to eliminate all sources of distortion with the goal of achieving the highest fidelity. But when they do that, they almost always FAIL. How many Direct Discs sound like that Glenn Miller? A dozen at most. The vast majority are just plain AWFUL. I know, I've played practically every one ever made.

Hall of Fame Pressing

AUDIOPHILE-APPROVED HEAVY METAL THUNDER! This Warner Brothers Green Label pressing DESTROYED the import copies we played it against. If you like the raw, rockin’ sound of the early Zep albums, you’re gonna find a whole lot to like about this one. Side one rates A++ while side two clocks in at A+. If you like hard rock music with impressive sonics, you’re gonna want to check this one out.

Side one has a mark that plays behind the thunderstorm intro (18 pops) and another one behind the intro to the fourth track (10 pops). Side two has a mark on the second track that plays pretty lighty behind the intro (15 ticks). None of the marks really interfere with the music, but if you can’t stand that kind of this you should steer clear. We’ve kept the price much lower than we would have charged for this copy otherwise.

David Bowie
David Live
(2 LPs)
Hot Stamper Sold! ($300)
  (Item #: bowielive_0609)

One of the two GREATEST LIVE ROCK AND ROLL RECORDS ever made is here with SUPER HOT STAMPERS. The other top live album is of course Waiting For Columbus, and the two have much in common. Most importantly, the songs played live on both albums are CONSISTENTLY better than their studio versions. (This is especially true on the Little Feat album. Little Feat was not a studio band and their live arrangements -- with the Tower of Power horns! -- just murder the studio ones.)

A Hall of Fame Pressing

This SUPER HOT STAMPER on BOTH sides had sound we never would have expected to hear on this record. Believe me, not too many sound like this one! Most copies have a smeary, veiled, stuck-in-the-speaker quality that makes for some painful listening. Cardboard drums. Non-existent ambience. No energy. The average copy of this album just sits on the turntable with nothing to say. What's Szymczyk's problem anyway? Can't the guy record an album any better than this after being in the studio for all these years?

Yes he can! Don't make the mistake of judging his work by the typical bad pressing of it, the kind that Elektra was churning out by the millions back in the day. Believe me, the master tape must be AWESOME if the sound of some of the records we played is any indication. And of course that's exactly how we know it is -- by th

Elton John
Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player

Hot Stamper Sold! ($150)
  (Item #: john_donts_0609)

This Original British DJM pressing on lovely reddish-purple transparent vinyl rates at least A+ on both sides! It’s not easy to find copies of this album that sound very good, but this one is dynamic, energetic and full of tubey magic. Both sides could use just a little more extension up top, but you can not argue with the big meaty bottom end that you’ll hear on BOTH sides. Most importantly, the vocals and piano sound JUST RIGHT. The overall sound is rich, smooth, and sweet.

This one comes complete with the heavy paper, full-color booklet (inserted, not bound-in) with lyrics and pictures.

Sam Rivers
Fuchsia Swing Song
  (Item #: riverfuchs)

Our Price: $39.99

This is a Blue Note Blue Label (’70s era) pressing with pretty good sound. We’d estimate it at about a solid A overall, but since we’ve never heard a better one this might be as good as it ever gets. The sound is clean, clear, and transparent throughout. The bass is well-defined, but I sure wish there were more of it! We almost never see clean copies of this album, so don’t hold your breath for a shootout in the near future.

We've put this one through our full cleaning process. The vinyl plays quietly, mostly Mint Minus throughout.

Hall of Fame Pressing

OH BABY! This is the HOTTEST copy of The Captain And Me to ever hit the site, bar none. The sound is nothing short of PHENOMENAL from the first cut to the last. Side two earned our top A+++ grade while side one clocked in just half a plus behind. You can’t even begin to imagine what we’ve gone through trying to find Hot Stampers for this album. Here’s the copy that proves it was all worth it.
