Steely Dan Aja

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: steelaja__debunked)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another MoFi LP debunked.

More Mofi Bashing, But Boy Does The MOFI Deserve It.

I remember back in the ’70s when I thought this album sounded pretty good on my plain old ABC original. Then I got a copy of the Mobile Fidelity pressing and I thought it sounded even better. Side two of the MOFI had bass that was only hinted at on my domestic copy.

Sometime in the ’80s I realized that the MOFI was hideously phony sounding, and that all the bass on side two was boosted far out of proportion to what was on the master tape. The song Home At Last must have at least an extra five DBs added at 40 cycles. It’s ridiculous. Add to that th

Listening Tests

(with Free Cisco Debunking Tool)

  (Item #: steelaja__listen)

Our track commentary for the song Home at Last makes it easy to spot an obvious problem with Cisco's remastered Aja:

"This is the toughest song to get right on side two. Nine out of ten copies have grainy, irritating vocals; the deep bass is often missing too. Home at Last is just plain unpleasant as a rule, which is why it's such a great test track. Get this one right and it's pretty much smooth sailing from here on out.

"If you own the Cisco 180 gram pressing, focus on Victor Feldman's piano at the beginning of the song. It lacks body, weight and ambience on the new pressing, but any of our better Hot Stamper copies will show you a piano with those qualities in spades all the way through. It's some of my favorite work by the Steely Dan vibesman. The thin piano on the Cisco release must be recognized for what it is: a major error on the part of the mastering engineers."

Fremer’s Steely Dan Folly

Money Can’t Buy You (Audio) Happiness

  (Item #: steelaja__fremer)

In his review of Aja, Michael Fremer writes: "This new Cisco reissue is vastly superior to both the original pressing (ABC AA 1006) and to Mobile Fidelity’s ½ speed mastered reissue (Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-033). If your stereo system (or your personal savior/used record dealer) tells you otherwise, blame it and/or him. ..."

I’m guessing that I must be that person. I’m certainly a record dealer, at least that much is true. I’m also trying my best to save you from wasting your money on the bad records regularly recommended by somewhat less-than-competent reviewers such as Mr. Fremer. If that qualifies me as Your Personal Savior, so be it. (Nothing spiritual implied of course.)

That Kind of Money Damn Well Better Buy You Amazing Sound!

  (Item #: steelaja__testimonial_)

This letter of the week comes from one of our long time customers, Gary, who was blown away by the sound of our Aja and Fragile Hot Stampers.

Dropping you a line to tell you that these two albums have four of the greatest sounding sides of music I have experienced.

Last week, when the Thursday mailer came out, I happened to be listening to The Yes Album, your hot stamper. I am astounded every time I play that record. I had no choice but to grab your Fragile HS. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on Aja as well, after shooting out the 4 or 5 copies I have. (I have an older HS of yours, but have misplaced it, or it was in the “good but not great” range).

Steely Dan Aja Testimonial

... Darn You and Your Hot Stampers! ...

  (Item #: steelaja__testimonial)

This week’s Hot Stamper Testimonial comes from one of our best customers, Roger, who, like us, is a GIANT Steely Dan fan. He feels that some of the Aja Truth isn’t being told on the new Cisco LP, and we concur.

Hi, Tom:

Just a note to let you know I finally got a chance to listen to your hot stamper Steely Dan Aja LP and compare it to copies from MFSL and Cisco. All I can say is darn you and your hot stampers and this expensive habit I cannot seem to break once I have heard them. The Aja title is no different in this regard. I actually listened to the MFSL copy first, and you know what, other than the bass being lightweight and the highs being entirely too hot, especially during the organ solo on Black Cow, the MFSL was not as tonally weird as many of their other titles. However, the fact that it is a little edgy and relentless was thrown in relief when throwing on the Cisco reissue.

Steely Dan's Aja and Fremer’s Folly

A New Customer Joins in the Fun

  (Item #: steelaja__letter)

One of our newest Hot Stamper Converts wrote to tell us of his amusement at the inability of certain Golden Ears to recognize and understand how dramatically different seemingly identical records can sound. Please to enjoy Ed’s letter.

It’s amusing that even Golden Ears who have the attention of large readerships can miss and misunderstand so much. You don’t have to understand the technical why of the variability of LPs to appreciate just how profound the audible differences can be from stamper to stamper. Even in acknowledging that differences are present, they do not seem to appreciate the extreme degree of the variation in sound among LPs from different stampers.
