The perfect blend between these two greats is exhibited during "Nostalgia," a seldom played or recorded song by the late Fats Navarro. It's especially evident when Phil is on clarinet & Conte has the mute in.
The title tune "Old Acquaintance" was written for this session by Charlie Shoemaker. An infectious melody with a latin flavor with Phil again on clarinet & Conte playing a subdued muted solo, but it was Charlie's vibes that gave this unusual haunting melody it's flavor.
To quote Conte, "I've just added a new fine song to my book." That's how intrigued he was with another seldom played or recorded song..."Nina Never Knew." You'll be impressed with Terry's beautiful & tender intro.
"Once More Once," written by Phil Woods, gave each man the chance to do it all. Basically, a blues, it jammed all the way & for seven minutes & thirty-one seconds we were all mesmerized.
After it was all over, you try to think of something very profound to say, but as the guys strolled into the studio to listen to the playback the mood seemed so confident & at ease that we knew descriptive adjectives were unnecessary... we could hear it in their music.
